Digital Healthcare

Digital Healthcare also known as e-health or telehealth is a rapidly evolving field. It consists in enhancing the delivery and management of health care. Various digital health applications have become a main staple in the healthcare industry to include telemedicine, remote health patient monitoring, health analytics, electronic medical records, mobile health apps to name a few.

Electronic medical records are arguably the most critical part of a sound health system. And yet may health facility fail to register, maintain, and secure adequately patient medical records. In his article “Canada’s Broken Electronic Medical Record Model”, Andrew MacLeod explains how medical files arrive dangerously incomplete or corrupted in the hands in the hands of doctors or health professionals in such a way that they would have no way to tell if a patient is due for a vaccine when consulting data from one of Canada’s biggest providers of medical records.

In other geographical locations, digital healthcare adoption is making slow progress despite hundreds of millions of dollars that have been spent. Some of the issues include high administrative burden, proximity to communities, a strong focus on data collection as opposed to healthcare transformation.

One key advantages of digital health care is its ability to transcend geographical barriers and provide health care services to patients irrespective of their geographical locations through teleheath. Furthermore, digital healthcare facilitates the exchange of information between medical providers. The resulting digital health data can be leveraged for the purpose of health analytics that could be used for various purposes to enhance the quality of healthcare.

Challenges however remain. Cybersecurity and privacy are some of the key concerns facing digital health practice. Digital literacy and disparities in technology access are important considerations particularly in low-income regions. As technology continues to advance, the potential for digital healthcare to transform the healthcare industry and improve patient outcomes is immense.
